recessive character

recessive character
recessive character,
the one of any pair of contrasting characters that is latent or subordinate in an animal or plant when both are present in the germ plasm. Example: If a guinea pig inherits a gene for black fur from one parent and a gene for white fur from the other, it will have black fur, as black fur is dominant and white fur is recessive. »

Recessive characters, even in the presence of dominant ones, are quite easily recognized (G. Fulton Roberts).
